Total Hemi-overgrowth in Pigmentary Mosaicism of the (Hypomelanosis of) Ito Type: Eight Case Reports.

2016

Abstract Pigmentary mosaicism of the (hypomelanosis of) Ito type is an umbrella term, which includes phenotypes characterized by mosaic hypopigmentation in the form of streaks, whorls, patchy, or more bizarre skin configurations (running along the lines of Blaschko): these cutaneous patterns can manifest as an isolated skin disorder (pigmentary mosaicism of the Ito type) or as a complex malformation syndrome in association with extracutaneous anomalies (most often of the musculoskeletal and/or nervous systems) (hypomelanosis of Ito). Affected individuals are anecdotally reported to have also partial or total body hemi-overgrowth (HOG), which often causes moderate to severe complications. We…

Quality of Life in a German Graves Orbitopathy Population

2010

To evaluate the validity and responsiveness of a German-language version of the disease-specific Graves orbitopathy quality-of-life questionnaire (GO-QOL).Prospective cross-sectional study. At a multidisciplinary university orbital center, 310 consecutive unselected Graves orbitopathy outpatients answered the GO-QOL before undergoing complete ophthalmic and endocrine assessment. The main outcome measures were the GO-QOL and its 2 subscales, Visual Functioning and Appearance. The QOL scores for the subscales Visual Functioning and Appearance were (mean ± SE) 72.5 ± 1.4 and 71.3 ± 1.5, respectively. Visual Functioning and Appearance were higher in mild (82.2 ± 2.2 and 86.0 ± 17.6) than in moder…

Randomized study comparing two tongue base surgeries for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

2009

To compare the effectiveness and morbidity of the tongue base radiofrequency and tongue base suspension techniques combined with uvulopalatopharyngoplasty for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.Prospective and randomized surgical trial at a university hospital. In total, 57 patients received either tongue base radiofrequency reduction (n = 29) or tongue base suspension (n = 28). Apnea-hypopnea index, lowest oxygen saturation (polysomnography), Epworth score, and side effects were assessed. Success was defined as aor =50 percent reduction and final apneahypopnea index15/h, and an Epworth score11.The success rates of the two procedures were 57.1 percent and 51.7 percent, respectively (…

Improved effectiveness from individualized dosing of self-administered biologics for the treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis: a 5-year retrospe…

2019

Background: Biologics for moderate-to-severe psoriasis are expensive and treatment substitutions may vastly increase cost. Moreover, administration regimens in routine practice may differ from recommended guidelines. Objectives: To evaluate long-term effectiveness, regimen, drug-survival, and efficiency of self-administered biologics in clinical practice. Methods: We performed a 5-year retrospective study in 72 patients (44 ± 14 years old) with moderate-to-severe psoriasis at the University Hospital La Plana (Vila-real, Spain), treated with subcutaneous biologics. We determined the effectiveness (PASI 75 or PASI < 5), and drug-survival using Kaplan-Meier estimates, and analyzed reasons for …

Role of Activity in Defining Metabolic and Contractile Adaptations After SCI

2016

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can lead to moderate to severe muscle paralysis, loss of lower-limb functionality and often results in a reduced physical activity. As a consequence, people with SCI demonstrate numerous metabolic and contractile transformations such as leg muscles atrophy, a transformation from slow, fatigue-resistant fibers to fast, fatigable fibers, a decreased vascularization. Appropriate exercise and most especially exercise using functional electrical stimulation (FES) is now well-known to have beneficial effects on muscle characteristics, force output, exercise capacity, but also bone mineral density and cardiovascular parameters. For example, increases in muscle mass and str…

Childhood-onset psoriasis generally follows an indolent course but patients with moderate or severe disease may require systemic treatment. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar la frecuencia relativa, las caracteristicas de los pacientes, el tratamiento empleado y los eventos adversos (EA) observados a partir del registro BIOBADADERM en ninos y jovenes con psoriasis moderada-grave. The aim of this study was to determine the relative proportion of children and young people aged up to 21 years with moderate to severe ps…

Six-minute walk test in moderate to severe heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: Useful for functional capacity assessment?

2015

Despite improvements in medical treatment and prevention, heart failure (HF) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide [1]. Currently, HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) has become the most prevalent form of HF in elderly patients [2,3]. The cardinal features in HF, aside from left ventricular systolic function, are exertional dyspnea and reduced aerobic capacity. Although the most accurate expression of exercise tolerance and severity in HF is measured by peak oxygen uptake (peak VO2), its assessment is not widely available in daily clinical practice.  This work was supported in part by grants from: Sociedad Española de Cardiología: Investigación Clínica en Cardio…

Trichobiolight: A new, effective protocol in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium

2021

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) with its precursor miniaturization of anagen phase (MA) and telogen effluvium (TE) represent nonscarring hair loss diseases which causes moderate to severe aesthetic and psychologic discomfort in affected people. Several therapeutic approaches have been tested through the latest decades, with different degree of success. In this study we aim to analyze the efficacy and outcome of an innovative therapeutic protocol, named TRICHOBIOLIGHT, a combination of active principles conveyed by mesotherapy directly on the scalp with a subsequent photobiostimulation session with LED light (630 nm). About 107 patients (49 women, 58 men, mean age 45-year-old) with clinical and …

Direct measurement of left ventricular outflow tract by transthoracic real-time 3D-echocardiography increases accuracy in assessment of aortic valve …

2007

Evaluation of aortic valve stenosis is a major clinical application of echocardiography. The widely employed continuity equation requires determination of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) area. We aimed at testing whether direct area measurement in a volume data set is superior to conventional calculation from the LVOT diameter. We performed LVOT measurement in 20 normal subjects and 83 patients with moderate to severe aortic stenosis with a transthoracic real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (3D-TTE) technique in two systolic frames. The off-line 3D-evaluation allows full choice of section planes within the acquired volume data set. The aortic valve area was calculated from …

Impaired Self-Awareness and Denial During the Postacute Phases After Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

2020

While a number of empirical studies have appeared on impaired self-awareness (ISA) after traumatic brain injury (TBI) over the last 20 years, the relative role of denial (as a psychological method of coping) has typically not been addressed in these studies. We propose that this failure has limited our understanding of how ISA and denial differentially affect efforts to rehabilitate persons with TBI. In this selective review paper, we summarize early findings in the field and integrate those findings with more recent observations (i.e., 1999-2019). We believe that this synthesis of information and expert clinical opinion will inform future research on ISA and denial as well as approaches to…
